Māra Kai
Manāki our Whānau
The Māra Kai at Te Aitarakihi started as a collaboration between Te Aitarakihi and Alliance Smithfield. The planning and ground preparation started in 2020 and had its first crop sown in 2022. Since then the māra capability and output has grown and is more than just a beautiful outdoor space. Our māra is a place that grows kai, helping to feed our hapori (community) with a commitment to honouring the whenua and fostering connections with nature. The māra is lead by Te Aitarakihi and their pool of dedicated volunteers. The māra serves as a place of mahi, reflection, sense of belonging and community.

Community involvement
Our gardens are maintained with the help of dedicated volunteers who embody the spirit of manaakitanga (hospitality) and kotahitanga (unity). Their efforts ensure that the gardens remain a source of pride and a resource for future generations. We are always looking for volunteers, so if you are interested, please contact our Volunteer Coordinator to find out more.
